A Dual Win for Murang’a University of Technology at the StartUp Africa Olympiad – Kabarak University
This week was a proud moment for Murang’a University of Technology (MUT) and our growing innovation community.
I am delighted to share that our students emerged among the top winners at the StartUp Africa Olympiad hosted at Kabarak University, bringing home:
🥇 1st Position – KES 75,000 for MaternaGuard™
🥉 3rd Position – KES 25,000 for TinniSync™
This is more than a competition win. It is a powerful statement about what happens when student creativity is nurtured through mentorship, practical engineering, and entrepreneurial thinking.
1. MaternaGuard™ – 1st Position
MaternaGuard™ is an innovative maternal health solution focused on postpartum safety through early detection.
The concept addresses one of the most urgent maternal healthcare challenges—early identification of excessive postpartum bleeding—using smart wearable sensing, real-time monitoring, and instant alerts for timely intervention.
At its heart, it is about one thing: saving mothers’ lives through accessible technology.
2. TinniSync™ – 3rd Position
TinniSync™ is a wearable health-tech innovation designed to support individuals experiencing somatic tinnitus, using posture monitoring and haptic feedback.
By combining human-centered design with wearable electronics and data feedback, the team created a solution that is practical, discreet, and deeply personal to the user experience.
Its message is simple yet powerful:
“Better posture today. A quieter tomorrow.”
For me, the most exciting part is not only the awards.
It is the fact that MUT secured both 1st and 3rd place in a highly competitive innovation platform.
That tells us something important:
Our students are identifying real African problems
They are designing locally relevant solutions
They are learning to move from idea → prototype → pitch → impact
This is the university innovation journey we believe in.
Innovation is not always about inventing something completely new from zero.
Often, innovation is taking an existing challenge and advancing knowledge, design, usability, affordability, or accessibility to a new level.
That is exactly what our students demonstrated.
Appreciation
Congratulations to the student innovators behind MaternaGuard™ and TinniSync™.
Thank you to the mentors, technical teams, organisers, and partners who continue to create spaces where students can experiment, fail, refine, build, and compete.
This achievement reflects the strength of the Murang’a University of Technology innovation ecosystem and reinforces our commitment to nurturing engineering, technology, entrepreneurship, and societal impact.
The future is bright.
And it is being built by our students.
Congratulations Team MUT.
Two podium finishes. One university. A dual win for innovation. 🚀
