MUT marks International Women’s Day

The Directorate of Gender and De- velopment joins hands with the University community to express heartfelt congratulations and to celebrate the achievements of the class of 2025. Grad- uation is more than the culmination of an academic pursuit; it is a celebration of growth, resilience and commitment to ex-cellence.

We especially acknowledge the diverse journeys that have led each of you to this milestone. These journeys were shaped by your unique identities, backgrounds and ex- periences. As you embark on the next chap- ter of your life, we encourage you to remain advocates for equity, inclusion and justice in all spheres. The world needs your voice, your leadership, and your compassion.

At the heart of the Directorate’s work is the belief that inclusive and equitable edu- cation transforms lives. This year, we have seen remarkable strides in advancing gen- der equality on campus through marking international gender-based celebrations and recognising persons with special needs. We have also promoted student-led initia- tives, capacity building, and mentorship pro- grammes on campus. These efforts refiect our collective commitment to fostering a learning environment where every student and staff member, regardless of gender, feels seen, supported, and empowered to succeed. During the 2024/2025 financial year, the University, through the Directorate, pro- cured Perkins Braille machines, Braille pa- per, and special papers to support students with visual disabilities and albinism.

Perkins Braille machines allow students with visual disabilities to write and access exams in alternative formats, ensuring that they can fully participate in their education. Ad- ditionally, the special papers were specifi- cally designed to accommodate the unique visual needs of students with albinism, pro- viding higher contrast for easier reading and reducing eye strain. These measures are a crucial part of the University’s efforts to create an inclusive academic environment for all students.

To our graduands, as you embark on the next chapter of your lives, we encourage you to remain advocates for equity, inclusion and justice in all spheres. Always remember that the world needs your voice, your lead- ership and your compassion.
